Town Budget

Last week, Bruce Hayn, Ron Goldstein, and I wrote a joint letter to the town thanking everyone for the support the budget received. It is truly a relief to have a budget in place so we can move the town forward. I know the tax increase is difficult in these economic times, but I can assure everyone that all the boards, commissions, and managers are making sure that tax dollars are spent wisely.

It’s said that the most valuable commodity is information. During the budget process, a lot of facts, figures, and data gets thrown around. Sometimes numbers or issues get confusing and you may have heard things that are not factual. Even though the budget process is over, I urge anyone with an outstanding question or issue to speak with me or any other board member. We want to make sure that everyone has all the facts.

Again, thank you for the support you have shown and we’re all doing our best to ensure Colchester is the community we all want it to be.

Memorial Day

This long weekend, we celebrate Memorial Day. Weather permitting, we will have a great parade with the participation of many different organizations and groups. I want to thank all who will be participating this year. I also want to sincerely that the Memorial Day Parade Committee who worked so hard to put together this event. Most don’t know of the effort these volunteers put into making this parade happen.

As you come out to enjoy the parade and festivities, I ask everyone to be mindful of the true meaning of this holiday. We enjoy the freedoms of this country because of the sacrifice of all the veterans who have served and fought for us. Whether they are home or abroad, please remember all that our veterans have done for us.

In the Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln said, “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us - that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion - that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain - that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

With those words in mind, and with the solemn understanding of all that veterans have contributed to this country, I ask everyone to remember those that have served, those that have fought, and those that have given the last full measure of devotion.
