CHILMARK LIBRARY TRUSTEES MEETING
January 17, 2018
Present: Trustees Jane Kaplan (Chair), Candy Shweder and Janet Weidner; Library Director Ebba Hierta; Assistant Library Director Rizwan Malik
Meeting called to order at 3 PM at the Chilmark Library. Minutes for the December 22, 2017 meeting were approved.
Director’s Report: Margot Datz has submitted her proposed ideas for several murals to be painted in the Children’s Room. This project will be funded by the Friends of the Chilmark Library. Candy Shweder moved that we accept the proposals; Janet Weidner seconded; and the motion was voted on and passed.
Ebba informed the Trustees that there is an adjustment to the Chilmark Library’s proposed FY19 to reflect an increase in the longevity line item. Candy Shweder moved that the Trustees accept the modified budget, and Janet Weidner seconded. The motion was voted on and approved.
Ebba reported that there has been damage to the Chilmark Library building, due to frost heaves. These include: sinking of the cement base supporting the book return boxes; torqueing of the basement bulkhead; plaster falling from the ceiling in the attic; separating/splitting of the dry wall in several places; and widening of the cracks between the floorboard in the old section of the library.
Old Business: The Chilmark Library’s hearing with the Financial Committee (FINCOM) will be held on February 5. Ebba has prepared talking points to use that night to explain the rationale behind some of the numbers, most specifically the request for the fourth benefitted position.
New Business: The Lunbeck family has donated $20,000 to the Chilmark Library in memory of their mother, Barbara, who had been President of the Friends of the Chilmark Library in the 1990s. They have requested that the money be used to incorporate handicapped accessible doors in the Chilmark Library. Ebba has contacted a firm which has done this type of work on the island before. They will make a site visit in the near future and determine the extent of the work required.
There have been staffing changes at the Chilmark Pre-School. There are now two co-directors.
Announcements: Ebba reported that the new color copier is in place and that it operates on coins.
