CHILMARK LIBRARY TRUSTEES MEETING
October 19, 2010
Present: Trustees Norman Freed, Jane Slater and Janet Weidner; Library Director Ebba Hierta.
Meeting called to order at 8:41 AM. Minutes of the September 2010 meeting approved as submitted.
Building and Grounds Report: The Library shares a well with the Community Center. During the quarterly water test this week, coliform bacteria was detected on the Community Center “side” of the plumbing that leads from the well. The Library’s plumbing did not show signs of the bacteria. However, subsequent to the test, a leak was detected near the well. The water to the Library will need to be turned off while repairs are made. A motion was made, seconded and approved to allow the Library Director to modify operating hours of the Library, at her discretion, while the well issues are resolved.
Correspondence: The Chilmark Library has been named as one of the top ten libraries in the country by a national ranking service for towns with a population of under 1000 people. The ranking is based on fifteen separate statistics, such as the number of programs, the number of items owned and the circulation.
Old Business: Ebba provided an assessment of how the cell phone use policy report (which we put into effect earlier this year) has been received. Overall, it has been effective, particularly having a designated place (the front meeting room) to which to direct cell phone users.
New Business: The Personnel Board is in the process of reviewing the job description for the Library Director. This job description was last reviewed in 2003. At last month’s meeting, the Trustees agreed that we would like to have input into the Library Director’s job description. Ebba provided the Trustees with the existing job description as well as a draft revised job description which she had prepared. The Trustees reviewed the draft and discussed our comments and suggestions at this meeting. Ebba plans to bring our draft Library Director job description to the next Personnel Board meeting. We expect to discuss the Personnel Board’s comments at the November Trustees meeting, and tweak the job description accordingly.
