Library Trustees 03/30/2010
MINUTES
CHILMARK LIBRARY TRUSTEES MEETING
March 30, 2010

Present: Trustees Norman Freed, Jane Slater and Janet Weidner; Library Director Ebba Hierta; Librarian Kristin Maloney.

Meeting called to order at 9:00 AM.  Minutes of the February meeting were approved.

Art Group:  The Chilmark School Children’s art work has been on display from mid-February through the end of March.  It has been well received, as always.

Building and Grounds:  The Friends of the Chilmark Library have requested that Meg Orlando do all of the outside landscaping for the library.  A motion was made, seconded and approved that the Trustees approve this approach for the library’s landscaping.

Program Group: Kristin reported that the teen group has completed writing and illustrating a book, called “The Scroll”.  The Friends paid to have copies printed for the authors as well as copies for the library for patron use.

Director’s Report: The Meeting Room is being used by US Census workers through the month of May for daily meetings.

The Chilmark Library may be able to qualify to receive a portion of federal stimulus money which has been made available for grants to libraries in rural communities.  A motion was made and unanimously approved that the Director apply for such a grant on the Chilmark Library’s behalf.  Our plan would be to use any money received from the grant to fund shelving and computer replacement.

Old Business:  Norman spoke with Donald Sexton with regards to a memorial this summer in honor of Jackie Sexton.  We are planning an afternoon tea, sometime in July, with the Friends.

New Business: We reviewed a proposed cell phone use policy, which identifies areas of the library where cell phones may be used, as well as gives library staff the ability to ask cell phone users to move outside, if they are being too loud.  We agreed to review the proposed policy, discuss any comments at our April meeting, and hopefully adopt the policy at that time.

There was a request to use the library parking lot for parking for a wedding on a Saturday afternoon in June, starting at 3 PM.  The library is open until 5:30 PM on Saturdays, and the trustees felt that private use of the parking lot could not be permitted while the library is open.

Meeting adjourned at 9:27 AM.  Next meeting will be April 29th at 9:00 AM.
