Library Trustees 11/18/2009
MINUTES
CHILMARK LIBRARY TRUSTEES MEETING
November 18, 2009

Present: Trustees Norman Freed, Jane Slater and Janet Weidner; Library Director Ebba Hierta; Librarian Kristin Maloney.

Meeting called to order at 9:04 AM.  Minutes of the October meeting were approved as amended.

Art Group: Artists for 2010 (with the exception of summer 2010 which is already full) continue to be scheduled.

Building and Grounds:  The tree which we have selected in memory of Jackie Sexton has been planted.  We will have a dedication ceremony in the spring.

Program Group: Our “Chowder and a Movie” program will be starting up again in January for the winter months.

Kristin reported that the Halloween Party was very successful.  The Teen Group planned the party and decorated the meeting room, including a maze, scary music and snacks.  The party was held for several hours in the afternoon and was well attended by many young children.

Chairman’s Report:  We are still trying to reach the Brickner family, for their guidance as to how to handle disbursement from the Elisa Brickner Poetry Fund.  Messages have been left with a family member.

Director’s Report: Ebba reported that SEMLS will be going away, as a cost cutting measure by the state.  This will impact services on which we rely.  For example, the Boston Public Library will be giving up on-line journal access for researchers, something that we can’t afford to provide either.  We will still have interlibrary loan but it may not be as efficient as it has been.

Old Business: We again discussed the possibility of adding one more hour to our Thursday hours (i.e. open at 2:30) to accommodate families who are on site to pick up children after school.  For financial reasons, this does not seem possible at this point.  The possibility of shifting hours (to open at 2:30 and close at 5:30) was discussed as well but rejected, since there are several adults that come in that last hour (5:30 to 6:30) to use the internet.  It was agreed to let this go for now and consider it again next year.

New Business: The Martha’s Vineyard Museum has requested a loan of our Stan Murphy painting for an exhibit they are planning.  The time period for the exhibit would be February – October 2010.  We agreed, subject to an appropriate insurance rider being taken out by the Museum.  We also agreed that we would ask if the museum would be willing to present a slide show on the exhibit at the Chilmark Library at a future date.
Friends Report: The Friends are going to run the Friday night movie event this winter.  The Friends will be holding the Library’s winter book sale which will begin on December 16th, concurrent with our holiday party.   We will be accepting book donations after December 7th.

Meeting adjourned at 9:55 AM.  Next meeting will be December 22nd  at 9:00 AM.
