Historical Commission Minutes 03/20/18
FINAL
Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chairman, Jim Malkin, John Flender, Steve McGhee, Barbara Armstrong and Chuck Hodgkinson.  Russell Maloney and Andrew Flake also attended.  John Flender and Lenny Jason did not attend.

Ms. Slater opened the meeting at 4:00 PM.

Andrew Flake for David Damroth:  Chuck H. explained the Commission approved a renovation and addition plan in February 2017.  Mr. Flake would like to review proposed changes to the windows and door.  The total plan calls for a house renovation and the addition of a bedroom and kitchen to the historic farmhouse at 4 Austin Pasture; Map 33 Lot 85.

Mr. Flake reviewed the desire to remove the French door and the addition of three windows together with a smaller window at the roof peak on the northeast elevation.  The Commission unanimously agreed the changes are an improvement to the previous design as they are even more consistent with the original architecture of the historic house.

Listing:  Town Master Plan historic resource # 28:  Simon Vincent-Austin-Stange-Sands house, opposite # 27i c. 1770-80.  One of the last sheep farms at Quitsa.  There is a presumed dolmen (called locally a “cromlech) on the property (#18, 21).  Original central chimney replaced by two small stacks in 19th century.  Now a transverse stair hall.

Russell Maloney:   Mr. Maloney explained the restoration of the historic house on his property is complete.  This structure is listed in the Town’s Master Plan as an important historic town resource.  He added that while not listed in the Master Plan he would like to review the renovation plans for the barn that is over 100 years old.  It will be converted into living space.  He said the barn has been consumed by powder post beetles which requires it to be razed.  He showed pictures of the barn that faces North Road and said the new building will look exactly as shown in the photo.

The Commission thanked Mr. Maloney for restoring the historic house so well and unanimously approved the proposed barn replacement.

Listing:  Town Master Plan historic resource # 22:  Captain Allen Tilton-Horace Flanders-J. Cagney-VonMehren house; North Rd. east of Tabor House Rd., c. 1760-70.  Part moved from common at cemetery c. 1830 by Alvin Flanders.  Renovated 1962, eliminating many old features                 (8, 15, 17, 21).

Administration:  The December 19, 2017 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved as presented by consensus.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 17, 2018 @ 4:00 PM.

With no further business the meeting adjourned at 4:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Chuck Hodgkinson, CAS.
