Historical Commission Minutes 06/14/16
FINAL
Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chair, Steve McGhee, John Flender and Lenny Jason.  Peter Rodegast and Allison Burger also attended.       Jim Malkin, Steve Flanders, Barbara Armstrong and Chuck Hodgkinson did not attend.

The meeting came to order at 5:30 PM.

Peter Rodegast for Up-Island, LLC; 21 Squibnocket Rd.; Map 35 Lot 24; Historic resource # 34:  “Captain Hilliard Mayhew-Vytlacil house; 18th century, west side Squibnocket Road (: 3 Richard L. Burt)”.   Mr. Rodegast explained the new owner of the Vytlacil house just received his required Special Permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals to do the renovation work previously reviewed by the Commission at its January 19, 2016 meeting.   He continued to say the owner would like to change the window design for the historic Vytlacil house on Squibnocket Road.  He does not want to install six panes over six windows on the east and south sides of the historic house as recommended by the Historical Commission in its letter dated January 28, 2016.  The owner wants to install windows with two panes over one to maximize the view.  The Zoning Board of Appeals issued a Special Permit for the renovations with the condition that the Historical Commission must approve the final window design.

After much discussion a motion was made to amend the window requirement as follows:  The new windows installed on the east side of the original historic house (facing Squibnocket Road) shall be six-over-six paned windows.  The windows on the other three sides of the historic structure may be two-over-one paned windows.  All other features outlined in the               January 28, 2016 still apply.  The motion was seconded and unanimously approved with four in favor.

Middle Road stone wall restoration and original town hall plaque dedication:  Ms. Slater mentioned the plaque is on the front lawn of town hall and the dedication ceremony will be on Thursday, June 16 @ 11:00 am.  Refreshments will be served and Harriette Otteson will make a presentation on the historic significance of the site.  A flyer has also been produced with the site’s history and location of the stone wall where the plaque will be placed.

Menemsha Fishermen’s Preservation Trust:  Meet the Fleet event on August 4:  Ms. Slater explained the event and what a success it was last year.  She asked if the Commission would be interested in setting up a booth to sell its stone wall DVD’s and have other items of interest for the public.  The Commission thought this was a good idea and agreed to proceed.  Chuck H. will make the arrangements.

Administration:  The approval of the May 17, 2016 meeting minutes was deferred to the next meeting.

There will be no July 19 or August 16 meetings.

With no further business the meeting adjourned at 6:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Chuck Hodgkinson, CAS from Ms. Slater’s notes and explanation.
