Historical Commission Minutes 09/15/15
FINAL
Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chairman, Lenny Jason, Steve McGhee, Barbara Armstrong and Chuck Hodgkinson.  Rodney Bunker also attended.  John Flender was absent.

The meeting came to order at 5:30 PM.

PAVE MENEMSHA SCHOOLHOUSE PARKING AREA AND DRIVEWAY:  Mr. Bunker thanked the Commission for its time and said he is representing the Police Chief on this project as he is off-island.  The plan to pave the parking area, side of the building and the back area was discussed at great length.  The Commission said they understood the request for paving because of the historic building’s current use as the Police Station.  If paved, the need for a storm water drainage plan was also discussed.  The Commission concluded there are other alternatives to paving that should be explored – such as concrete pavers; re-grading with a plan to manage water runoff which will reduce erosion.  The Commission prefers a parking surface with less impact to the historic site and would like to see alternative solutions that will stabilize the surface.  A motion was made and seconded to send a letter to the Selectmen outlining the Commission’s opinion.  With no further discussion the motion passed unanimously with four in favor.

MEET THE FLEET:  Ms. Slater commented on how successful the Selectmen’s “Meet the Fleet” day was and suggested the Commission send a letter to the Selectmen encouraging them to continue hosting this event every year.  The Commission agreed.

PIONEER HOUSES OF MARTHA’S VINEYARD BY JONATHAN SCOTT:  Chuck H. shared a copy of the updated edition with the Commission and mentioned Mr. Scott asked if they would like to purchase the book for $80.  The Commission agreed this would be a good resource to have in Town Hall and approved the purchase.

SHERIFF’S MEADOW LIBRARY TALK:  Ms. Slater commented on how successful Adam Moore’s talk about the restoration of the Mayhew, Mitchell, Hancock house on Quansoo Farm was for the Library.  The meeting room was filled to capacity.  Chuck H. added 21 people attended the guided tour of the project the following day.

NEW MEMBERS:  Several additional names for possible new Commissioners were discussed.

MV MUSEUM POSSIBLE SECOND CPA FUND REQUEST FOR THE MARINE HOSPITAL RESORATION PROJECT:  Chuck H. mentioned that Dan Waters inquired about submitting an application for a second grant of CPA Historic Preservation Funds for this project.  Town voters approved appropriating $31,512 for this project at the April 2014 Annual Town Meeting.  Chuck H. mentioned no work has been done on the roof restoration and Chilmark’s funds are still in the bank.  The Commission unanimously agreed they would not support a second request until real progress is made on the first appropriation.  Chuck H. will relay these comments to Mr. Waters.

ADMINISTRATION:  The July 21, 2015 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved by consensus.

With no further business to conduct the meeting adjourned at 6:20 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Chuck Hodgkinson, CAS.
