Historical Commission Minutes 07/21/15
FINAL
Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chairman, Lenny Jason, John Flender and Chuck Hodgkinson.  Barbara Armstrong and Steve McGhee were absent.

The meeting came to order at 5:44 PM.

AUGUST GUEST SPEAKER:  Chuck H. confirmed Adam Moore of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation will gladly host a talk at the Chilmark Library on Wednesday, August 19                  @ 5:00 PM.  He will discuss the significant restoration of the historic Mayhew-Hancock-Mitchell house on Quansoo Farm – circa 1655.  Mr. Moore will also host a guided tour of the house and project the following morning, August 20 @ 9:00 AM.  Chuck H. will coordinate with Mr. Moore including refreshments for the guided tour.  It was also agreed to meet at the Town Hall parking lot for the guided tour and car pool to the site.

SQUIBNOCKET POND DISTRICT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SPDAC):   Ms. Slater explained this is a special committee created by the Planning Board to oversee proposed construction projects in the Squibnocket Pond Zoning District (Article 12 of the Zoning Bylaws).  John Flender has represented the Historical Commission for many years and has decided to step down.  We will need a replacement to represent the Historical Commission.  The Commission immediately agreed this assignment is right up Mr. McGhee’s alley.  A motion was made to appoint Steve McGhee as the Historical Commission’s representative to the SPDAC.  The motion was seconded and with no further discussion passed unanimously with three in favor.

NEW MEMBERS:  Ms. Slater discussed there are two openings on the Commission that should be filled.  The Commissioners discussed various residents who have an interest in Chilmark’s history and historic structures.  Chuck H. will contact several names to explain the openings and propose if they are interested in serving to contact the Selectmen’s office.

VYTLACIL HOUSE:  Ms. Slater mentioned she met the new owner of the Vytlacil house on Squibnocket Road (Chilmark Master Plan historic resource # 34; Captain Hilliard Mayhew-Vytlacil house; 18th century; west side Squibnocket Road).  She explained the new owner has no plans at the moment but will most likely work on the interior of the house.

ADMINISTRATION:  The May 19, 2015 meeting minutes were reviewed and unanimously approved by consensus.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 15 @ 5:30 PM.

Chuck H. mentioned the Police Chief would like to meet with the Commission to discuss the parking area surface.  The Commission agreed to place this on the September 15 agenda.

Chuck H. will also coordinate the restoration of the remaining slate head stones in Abel’s Hill Cemetery with Kai Nalenz—tentatively slated for September after Labor Day.
With no further business to conduct the meeting adjourned at 6:01 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Chuck Hodgkinson, CAS.
