Historical Commission Minutes 03/17/15
FINAL
Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chairman, Lenny Jason, Barbara Armstrong, Steve McGhee, and Chuck Hodgkinson.  Bette Carroll, John Flender and Karin Wetmore were absent.

The meeting came to order at 5:15 PM.

CHILMARK TOWN FLAG:  Tim Carroll asked the Historical Commission for design suggestions for a Town flag.  The statehouse is seeking town flags for display.  The Commission reviewed the town flag designs of several towns throughout the Commonwealth.  After discussion they thought a graphic artist should be consulted and recommended placing the town seal on a light blue background.

DEWOLF THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHS:  Ms. Slater mentioned Simon Thompson may be interested in selling some of Dewolf Thompson’s photographs of Chilmark.  The Commission asked Chuck H. to contact Simon and let him know the Commission is interested in acquiring the photos – if possible.

AUGUST GUEST SPEAKER:  Ms. Slater updated the Commission on the Sheriff Meadow Foundation’s (SMF) significant progress on restoring the historic Mayhew-Hancock-Mitchell house on Quansoo Farm – circa 1655.  Ms. Slater suggested inviting SMF Executive Director Adam Moore to give a talk this August at the Library with a possible follow up guided tour of the house the morning after the talk.  The Commission thought this was a wonderful idea and asked Chuck H. to contact Adam to see if he is interested and available.

2015 HISTORICAL COMMISSION AWARD:  Ms. Slater canvassed the Commission on possible candidates for this year’s award recognition.  The Commission unanimously and enthusiastically nominated Bette Carroll for her many contributions to preserving Chilmark’s history and heritage.  Chuck H. will order the name plaque.  More details will be discussed at the next meeting.

ADMINISTRATION:  The January 20, 2015 meeting minutes were reviewed and unanimously approved as presented by consensus.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 19 @ 5:30 PM.
With no further business to conduct the meeting adjourned at 5:32 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Chuck Hodgkinson, CAS.
