FINAL
Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chair, Lenny Jason, John Flender, Barbara Armstrong and Chuck Hodgkinson.  Bette Carroll, Steve McGhee and Karin Wetmore were absent.

The meeting came to order at 5:00 PM.

AUGUST 2014 HISTORICAL COMMISSION GUEST SPEAKER:  Chuck H. informed the Commission that art historian and author Henry Adams has agreed to be the Historical Commission’s guest speaker at the Chilmark Library on August 13, 2014.  He will speak about Thomas Hart Benton, Adolf Dehn, their artistic circle and engagement with Martha’s Vineyard.  The talk will take place on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 @ 5:00 PM.  A viewing of Chilmark works of both artists will then take place at Jane Slater’s shop on Thursday, August 14 @ 9:30 AM.  Mr. Adams may have a speaker’s fee of $500 which is budgeted if needed.

APRIL 2014 ANNUAL TOWN MEETING CPA HISTORIC PRESERVATION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE’S CONSIDERATION:  As follow up Chuck H. reviewed Town Counsel’s opinion on all of the proposed CPA fund requests the Commission voted on at last month’s meeting—which were contingent upon town counsel comment.  All of the CPA Historic Preservation fund requests were reviewed.  As recommended by Town Counsel and for the record the following projects were voted as being important to the Town’s history and culture as indicated.

  • The Abel’s Hill Cemetery headstone restorations—unanimous four in favor.
  • The historic documents and artifacts held by the Agricultural Society—majority vote with three in favor and one opposed (Ms. Armstrong).
  • The MV Museum’s historic restoration of the Marine Hospital in Tisbury—unanimous four in favor.
A vote was not required for the County Courthouse and Gay Head Light projects because both are already listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.  The Mayhew-Hancock Mitchell house in Quansoo Farm is listed as the first important Town historic resource in Chilmark’s Master Plan.

ADMINISTRATION:  The October 15, 2013 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved as presented with three in favor and one abstention (Mr. Jason).

The Commission reviewed several old photos of Chilmark and Menemsha that were donated by Ann Wallace.  It was unanimously agreed to send a formal letter of thanks for this generous and considerate donation.

Ms. Slater and Mr. Flender will review and select the Chilmark photos needed for the 2013 Annual Town Report.

The draft FY 2015 budget was reviewed.  A motion was made and seconded to approve the budget as presented.  The motion passed unanimously with four in favor.

NEXT MEETING:  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 @ 5:00 PM.
With no further business to conduct the meeting adjourned at 5:25 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Chuck Hodgkinson, CAS.
