Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were: Jane Slater, Chair, Lenny Jason, Steve McGhee, John Flender and Chuck Hodgkinson. Bette Carroll, Karin Wetmore and Barbara Armstrong were absent.
The meeting came to order at 5:14 PM.
HISTORICAL COMMISSION AWARD: Ms. Slater asked the Commissioners to think about possible nominations for this year’s award honoring those who have made significant contributions to preserving Chilmark’s history. The candidates will be reviewed at the next meeting.
GRAVESTONE RESTORATION – ABEL’S HILL CEMETERY: The Commission discussed the proposal from Kai Nalenz of Gravestone Services of New England to restore 35 gravestones in the cemetery. A motion was made to refer the proposal to the Cemetery Commission for its input. The motion was seconded. Mr. Flender, the Cemetery Commission Chairman agreed to bring it up with the other Commissioners. The motion came to a vote and passed unanimously with four in favor.
CHILMARK SCHOOL TOUR OF MAYHEW-MITCHELL HOUSE, QUANSOO: Chuck H. mentioned the dates that Adam Moore, Sheriff’s Meadow Executive Director will host a tour by the Chilmark School are Thursday, May 23 with a rain date of Friday, May 24. The time and transportation will be confirmed.
MIDDLE LINE ROAD STONE WALL RENOVATIONS: Chuck H. informed the Commission that Jimmy Morgan will begin work next week on the three stone walls on Middle Road.
APRIL 22 ANNUAL TOWN MEETING: The two CPA Historic Preservation warrant articles were reviewed for the upcoming town meeting. Both of the requests from the MV Museum for artifact restoration and the County Commissioners to restore the Courthouse windows are for Chilmark’s share of the funding for phase II of each project.
MEETING MINUTES: The February 19, 2013 meeting minutes were reviewed and approved with three in favor and one abstention (Mr. Flender). Review of the January 15, 2013 meeting minutes was deferred to the next meeting when a quorum of those present on January 15th can approve them.
NEXT MEETING: If needed, the next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 @ 5:00 PM.
