CHRIS ALLEY DISCUSSION – HISTORIC HAMMETT FARM RELOCATION AND RENOVATION; 4 Hammett Lane; Map 8 Lot 57:  Chuck H. summarized that the Town’s Bylaw for historic structures requires Historical Commission review of proposed renovations to historic structures.  The Hammett Farm is historic resource # 23 in the Town’s Master Plan; circa 1762 “half house with ell”.  It was previously moved 100 feet south to its current location.

Mr. Alley reviewed the proposed renovations and changes the current owners would like to make to the farmhouse and ell.  The overall plan is to relocate and restore the “half house with ell” as shown on the elevations plan A-200 dated June 11, 2012.  The key features and upgrades for the historic structure include:

  • Relocate the historic half-house Cape and ell portions of the existing structures.
  • Remove the master bedroom addition.
  • A new concrete foundation will be built with a fieldstone exterior.
  • The house will be re-shingled.
  • The asphalt roof will be returned to a cedar-shingled roof.
  • All windows will be replaced and return to a 6 over 6 style.
  • New wooden sashes are planned.
  • The window trim will be restored or replaced as needed.
  • The chimney above the roof ridge will be removed before moving the house.  It will be replaced with “old brick” after the house is set on its foundation.
After much discussion the Commission thanked Mr. Alley and thought this is a nice renovation plan.  A motion was made to endorse the plan as presented.  The motion was seconded and with no further discussion passed unanimously with five in favor.  The Commission asked Chuck H. to send a confirming memo to the Planning Board and Building Inspector.
