Historical Commission Minutes 04/18/12
FINAL

Present for the Historical Commission and attending the meeting were:  Jane Slater, Chair, Bette Carroll, Karin Wetmore, John Flender, Steve McGhee, Barbara Armstrong and Chuck Hodgkinson.  Lenny Jason was absent.

The meeting came to order at 5:05 PM.  

HISTORICAL COMMISSION AWARD:  The Commission discussed possible nominees for the 2012 and 2013 awards.  

FY 2012 AND 2013 BUDGETS:   Chuck H. outlined the projected FY 2012 budgets and expenses and the FY 2013 planned budgets.  A more detailed update will be prepared for the next meeting.  The Commission may need to encumber any unused FY 2012 expense budgets for FY 2013 to cover the commitments made to date.

AUGUST 15, 16 2012 GUEST SPEAKER:  Chuck H. reviewed a draft outline for Kai Nalenz’s tentative talk at the Library and field workshop at Abel’s Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Nalenz is the owner of Gravestone Services of New England.  The Commission thought this would be an interesting topic and event.  Chuck H. will contact Mr. Nalenz and obtain more details and firm cost estimates.

JESSE LITTLE DOE BAIRD:  Ms. Slater mentioned that Ms. Baird was awarded the Bay State Legacy Award for her work on preserving the Wampanoag Tribe’s linguistic heritage and teaching their ancient language.  The Commission agreed to send Ms. Baird a letter of congratulations on her achievements and thanks for her hard work.

ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIPS:  The Commission renewed its membership in the Gravestone Association and asked Chuck H. to provide an update on the MV Museum, Historic New England and Mass. Historical Society memberships.  Ms. Slater also asked Chuck H. to provide the list of members for Edgartown’s Historic District Commission.

NEXT MEETING:  The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 @ 5:00 PM.

With no further business to conduct the meeting adjourned at 5:50 PM.
