Conservation Commission Minutes 05/14/2018

Chichester Conservation Commission Meeting
DRAFT Minutes of Meeting May 14, 2018
Shaw Pasture

Present:  Jim Eggers, Bob Mann, Marianne DiTaranto, Zack Boyajian, Gordon Jones
Call to Order at 7:00 pm.

The meeting was held to talk about the re-design of the driveway by NRCS and several items related to the maintenance of Shaw Pasture.    The following summarizes views of attendees

Moving ahead with the current design

We should move ahead with driveway and wetlands permits to see what changes might be needed to build the driveway as designed in 2019.   In the meantime, we should establish the existing area at the Shaw Field (across from the yellow house) as parking for those wishing to visit the Pasture for recreational purposes.  A foot path behind the stone wall on the Field side paralleling Main Street could be developed for people to cross Main Street at the snowmobile trail.   Maintenance vehicles could continue to enter the Pasture at either of the two existing access points.  A final decision on building the driveway would take place after any new information resulting from obtaining the two permits as well as gauging the need and desire for public access.

There was concern expressed about making any access improvements adequate for future forestry equipment.   It is possible to reinforce the existing bridge using steel members stored at the Town Garage.  We also explored a rock fill crossing of the stream that already exists in the woods downstream from the bridge.

We should add parking to the plans at the southerly end of the driveway between the pines.   We have talked about parking for 4 cars in the past.

Maintenance items

Mike Mobbs has started pulling rocks at the west end.
There are many branches down across the fence on the south fence line as well as the major pine blowdown in the corner.
We will smother the knotweed around the westerly entrance with plastic and carpet so to prevent its spread toward the Pasture away from its current location along the road.
Brush clearing and chipping to date looks great.

Work day scheduled for 6/9 or 6/16, 9 am.

Meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.
