Minutes – Worksession         6/18/15

Town Administrator’s Report

Mr. Warrington explained that the bump on 63rd Avenue has been caused by underground water and the Department of Public Works should be repairing it in the next week or so.  Water under the BW Parkway is an issue that SHA will have to address.

Chief’s Report

Chief Robshaw we had a very quiet 4th of July.  We just received another $11,000 in aggressive enforcement from SHA.  Public Safety day is tentatively September 16th.  Verizon updated our Police phone and there were some problems, but now we have it back on line.  At the CPACT meeting there was mention of crime issues discussed on social media and I am cautioning you to not rely on that information for accuracy.  If you really want to know, just call me.

CM Eldridge I heard in Takoma Park that they allow people to communicate to the police via text.  Is that something that we can potentially do in the future?

Chief Robshaw I am not opposed to that, but I want the interaction with the officer in order to get the full story.  I like to find out what is really transpiring.  We prefer the voice communications because it allows us to clarify information before we take action.  I can talk to our communications people.

Mayor before we come to final conclusion on this, I want to tee it up for the Worksession and would like your full input. What should someone do if they see a crime in progress?  Should they post on social media or make a phone call?

Chief Robshaw I understand that going through communications is slow, but I still want to be able to talk to the person that has information for whatever scene I am going.  I am always mystified that there are postings on social media on crime, but a call is never made to the police.

Recreation Council

Mayor we have been talking about the scheduling of the gym and there is only one meeting per year, so we are requiring all users of the gym to participate in the Recreation Council and there will be three meetings per year: September, January and May.

Green Infrastructure Committee

Mayor I did attend their meeting.  They are focusing on the addition to Pinkey’s Park, water barrel proposal and the National Park Service regarding the lots in Ward 1.  We are looking for volunteers as well.

Cheverly Day Committee

Mayor we look forward to next year and it is a parade year next year.

Planning Board Report

Mayor the Planning Board is this Tuesday night at 7:30pm.  They are closing down the Envision Cheverly document as we are getting ready to kick-off the Cheverly Sector Plan.

Citizen Input

Mayor and Council Announcements

CM Coolen this weekend, Saturday, please come to Town Park for the Community Market.  Support our local vendors and say hi to your neighbors.

CM Riazi a few of us went to the MML Convention and we learned a lot as to how to be good councilmembers and the opportunity to meet with councilmembers and mayors of towns around us.  There were good sessions on vest cameras and ethics.

Mayor  I spoke to the people at New Horizons today and one of the things they are pushing is electronic recycling.  They are doing the collection, sorting and moving but not the dismantling.  They will have their first day at the old fire station 22.  Their event will be on July 22nd.  Worksession for July :  MNCPPC Presentation Historic Presentation, D’Ranch Liquor License Request, Amending the Public Information Policy, MML Discussion, Building Permit Policy Insurance, Cheverly Industrial Park, Department Head Evaluations, Texting to Police Number, WMATA Changes, Conversation on Design of Cheverly Avenue at 202.
