Minutes for July 8, 2009 Selectmen’s Meeting

Members Present:  Jean C. Harmon, Daniel T. Collomy, Robert C. Libby, Linda W. Pulsoni and Peter E. W. Burns.

The Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

  • Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes

  • Discussion held between 5:00 & 7:00 p.m.
5:00 p.m. – Chief Mike Grovo introduced two Reserve Officers

Other Discussions – There will be a Department Head Meeting in the next week.  A topic of discussion will be new budget for the next fiscal year.

  • Email from Maine CDC Operations – Notice Maine CDC will operate in a limited capacity during State government closure days
  • Letter from Maine Municipal – Re:  Annual Election for MMA Vice President and Executive Committee Members
  • Letter from Sharon Newell, Buxton Garden Club – Re:  Grant for Planting flowers and bushes at the Korean War Memorial

Selectman Libby reported it had been a slow week.  The Board of Selectmen did select three people to serve on the Charter Commission.

Selectman Burns reported that he is studying budgets.

Selectman Pulsoni stated that she had received a listing of brooks, streams and lakes that had been stocked with fish from Representative Rob Hunt and she thought it was good information.  She also stated that saying the Pledge of Allegiance was a good thing and she felt it gave the Meeting a more professional touch.  In addition she stated that starting soon each Meeting would have a Department Head scheduled to attend.

Selectman Harmon said that it was a slow week with the Holiday.  Last Thursday the Board held an Executive Session with the Town’s attorney for one hour.

E.O.091007012 – An order to appoint David A. Dunn to the position of Charter Commission Member.  Approved 5-0.

E.O.091007013 – An order to appoint Brent D. Havu to the position of Charter Commission Member.  Approved 5-0.

E.O.091007014 – An order to appoint Daniel T. Collomy to the position of Charter Commission Member.  Approved 4-0-0     1 Abstention

E.O.091007015 – An order to approve Michelle M. Lohutko’s appointment to the position of full time Animal Control Officer effective July 1, 2009 at a pay rate of $12.69 per hour.  Approved 5-0.

E.O.091007016 – An order to approve 80 hours of vacation time for John Myers.  
Approved 5-0.

E.O.091007017 – An order to approve the hire of Cody Burrows as a part time employee at the Transfer Station effective July 11, 2009 at a pay rate of $10 per hour.  Approved 5-0.

There will be a baked bean and casserole supper at the Pythian Sisters Hall on Route 22 on Saturday, July 11 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. to benefit the Buxton Food Co-Op.  $6 per person.  Children under 6 free.



  • Public Comments and Questions
May Schumacher thanked all of the sponsors who are supporting the Buxton Community Day event.  Enough money has been raised to pay for the event.  She stated that the entire community has stepped up to the task to make it happen.  The event starts at noon on Friday, July 24 and ends with a movie on a 22 foot screen at Weymouth Park.  Saturday, July 25 the day starts with a road race.  Breakfast will be served at 8:00 a.m. and the Parade starts at 10:00 a.m.  There will be events for the kids, a frog jumping contest, bungee jumping, mechanical bull, and a ladies fry pan toss.  A horseshoe tournament, a pig scramble and live music in the afternoon.  A bean supper at 5:00 p.m. and the day ends with fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

The Dorcas Society Annual Fair also takes place on Saturday, July 25 at the Tory Hill Church.

Rob Hunt thanked May for all the hard work she has put into the Community Day event.  He stated that the Legislature is out of session for the summer but bills should be ready to be introduced by mid September.  He stated he will be on vacation and will be away from his computer.  He will try to check in if any one needs something.

Tashia Geaumont, Recreation Director, reported that she is working with the Standish Recreation Department to put together senior bus trips.  A bus trip to the Botanical Garden in Boothbay is scheduled for August 25.  The price is $30.

A trip to the Dessert of Maine is planned and will cost $25.  Call the Recreation Department for more information on these trips and sign up forms.

The Recreation Department is also offering a Red Sox bus trip on July 27.  The price is $75 and includes transportation to Boston and back.

Don’t forget the Recreation Department also has discounted movie tickets, Sea Dogs and Funtown passes.  

Summer Camp is going well with 90 children enrolled.  Fall soccer registrations are coming in as well.
