School Board Minutes 01/08/2015

                                                                                January 8, 2015

                        A meeting of the Berlin Board of Education was held in the Berlin High School library beginning at 6:00 p.m. Present for the meeting were Corinne Cascadden, Nicole Plourde, Denise Valerino, Louise Valliere, Lynn Moore, Donald Labrecque, Bryan Lamirande, Tim Forestall, Roland Pinette, Cheryl Pinette, Dan Record, Amy Huter, Julie King, Gary Bisson, Martha Miller, Autie Hamilton, David Griffin, and a member of the press.  

MINUTES         On a motion by Denise Valerino, seconded by Louise Valliere, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the December 18, 2014 meeting. The motion passed unanimously.

WARRANTS                On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to approve the warrants dated January 5, 6, and January12, 2015 for the amounts of $1,785.69, $16,282.78, and $402,437.20 respectively. On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.

FINANCIAL REPORT        None

COMMENTS                A member of the press requested information on the Berlin High School Principal search. She was informed that information would be discussed under New Member Business.

DESTINATION IMAG       David Griffin invited School Board members to participate as appraisers for the Destination Imagination Regional Tournament on March 14, 2015. A training session will be held on February 15, 2014 for 20-25 volunteers. He also urged them to attend the opening ceremony of the tournament.

PRESCHOOL               Corinne Cascadden presented the salary and benefits for the new Pre-School Coordinator position for Board approval. On a motion by Louise Valliere, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to approve these benefits as presented. On a roll call vote, all members voted in favor.

FY 16 BUDGET            The Superintendent and Administration reviewed the various departments of the FY16 budget with a 10.3% increase of $1,796,927. After the presentation the School Board discussed their priorities were to implement full day kindergarten and to continue with one to one computers. School Board members agreed that it was unrealistic to present the amount of this budget to the public. Much discussion ensued regarding the Affordable Health Care Act which is the catalyst for such an increase. School Board members advised the Administration to decrease their request by one million dollars. Preparation for the Budget Hearing will take place at the next school board meeting.
COMMENTS                None

MEMBER BUSINESS Nicole informed the Board that the review of applicants for the Berlin High School Principal position had been done and that the interview committee will be interviewing NH Certified and qualified candidates sometime in February.

NON PUBLIC              On a motion by Denise Valerino, seconded by Donald Labrecque, the Board voted to go into nonpublic session at 8:40 p.m. in accordance with RSA 91-A3II, (a), (b) & (c). On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.

                        On a motion by Lynn Moore, seconded by Louise Valliere, the Board voted to come out of nonpublic session at 9:05 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. No votes were taken in nonpublic session.

STAFFING                On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Denise Valerino, the Board voted to approve the following staffing changes:

Victoria Hill – Preschool Coordinator - District

                        All nominations are contingent on the applicant passing a background check.
                        The motion passed unanimously.
        
ADJOURN         On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to adjourn it’s meeting at 9:08 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.

BERLIN BOARD of EDUCATION
NONPUBLIC SESSION
January 8, 2015


On a motion by Denise Valerino, seconded by Donald Labrecque, the Board voted to go into nonpublic session at 8:40 pm in accordance with RSA 91-A3II (a), (b), and (c). On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.



The Board reviewed the applicants for the Berlin High School Principal position.


On a motion by Lynn Moore, seconded by Louise Valliere, the Board voted to come out of nonpublic session at 9:05 p.m.~  The motion passed unanimously.~
