A meeting of the Berlin Board of Education was held in the Berlin High School library beginning at 6:00 p.m. Present for the meeting were Nicole Plourde, Louise Valliere, Donald Labrecque, Lynn Moore, Denise Valerino, Corinne Cascadden, Bryan Lamirande, Amy Huter, Georgia Caron, Dan Record, Tim Forestall, Gary Bisson, Roland Pinette, Cheryl Pinette, Patricia Packard, Rosemary Rancourt, Michele Pribbernow, Jane Leblanc, Kathy Keene, Shannon Taylor, Amelia Alton, Lucille Lambert, Angela Duquette, Debbie Beaudoin, Cheryl McCormick, Emily Frizzell, Stephanie Hogan, Ted Pacheco and members of the press.
MINUTES On a motion by Lynn Moore, seconded by Donald Labrecque, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 15, 2014 meeting, public session. The motion passed unanimously.
WARRANTS On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Denise Valerino, the Board voted to approve the warrants dated, May 26, June 2, and June 9, 2014 for the amounts of $1,459.47, $12,088.82 and $$123,549.36 respectively. On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.
FINANCIAL REPORT The Board reviewed and approved the financial report. .
COMMENTS Kathy Keene, Early Childhood Initiative representative from White Mountains Community College, presented a letter to the Board in opposition to the district implementing all-day kindergarten.
CO-OP HOCKEY Information was reviewed of a Co-operative Boys Ice Hockey team with Berlin and Gorham, to be implemented in the next school year.
PRE-SCHOOL Michele Pribbernow presented a summary of her work with Pre-School Collaboration and transition.
ALL DAY KDG. Amy Huter, Brown School Principal, along with members of her staff informed the Board on the implementation of All Day Kindergarten and a Student Support Center. Discussion ensued.
AREA AGREEMENT The Superintendent reviewed information obtained by the district’s attorney on the issue of Educational Manifest Hardship and Best Interest of the Child in relation to the AREA Agreement between Berlin and Milan. The Boards from both districts will discuss this at a June 19, 2014 joint meeting.
SUPER’S REPORT The Superintendent informed the Board of the following issues:
- A special Berlin Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 7:00 a.m. in the Office of the Superintendent to approve the warrant.
- Evaluation of School Board Operations
- NH “ED” ies Awards
- Drop out and Graduation reports
COMMENTS None
MEMBER BUSINESS Donald Labrecque stated that the Awards Ceremony at BHS was “awesome”.
Nicole Plourde toured the house built by the BHS Building Trades program. She complimented the students and Roland Pinette for a fantastic job.
NON PUBLIC On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to go into nonpublic session at 8:05 p.m. in accordance with RSA 91-A3II, (a), (b) & (c). On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.
On a motion by Lynn Moore, seconded by Donald Labrecque, the Board voted to come out of nonpublic session at 9:50 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. No additional votes were taken in nonpublic session
STAFFING Board consensus was to approve Joanne Murphy’s request to utilize the district early retirement package.
ALL DAY KDG On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Denise Valerino, the Board voted to approve the implementation of a Student Support Center at Brown School beginning September, 2014. Donald Labrecque, Lynn Moore, Denise Valerino, and Louise Valliere voted in the affirmative, with Nicole voting in the negative. The motion passed by a 4 to 1 margin.
On a motion by Donald Labrecque, seconded by Louise Valliere the Board voted to approve the implementation of All Day Kindergarten in September 2015; allowing staff and administration the time to plan, create and reorganize grades to accommodate the space needs at Brown School. The motion passed unanimously.
BESS On a motion by Louise Valliere, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to approve the BESS Tentative Agreement. On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.
ADJOURN On a motion by Denise Valerino, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to adjourn it’s meeting at 10:00 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
