COMMENTS None
COMM. DISEASES Nicole Plourde recommends that the head lice newsletter go out at the beginning of the school year. Donald Labrecque feels that if there is a case of head lice found in a classroom, notification should go out to the parents. Nicole Plourde strongly believes that parents should not feel like they are being dismissed when they come to the school with a fear or concern. Lynn Moore suggested that an education flyer go out to parents at the start of each school year. They need to be reminded. Gary Bisson felt that this issue should be dealt with differently depending upon the age of the students.
PROJECT YOUTH Jim Michalik and Naomi Levesque informed the Board that this was the 10th year of the After School Program and that is was one of only three programs accredited in the state. The total cost of the program is $287,000, with the primary expense being wages. $187,000 of this program is funded by the 21st Century Grant, $50,000 from Berlin Public Schools and the remainder coming from donations and smaller grants. Staff members have been attending training to teach curriculum for the STEM program.
SUPER’S REPORT The Superintendent informed the Board of the following issues:
- Dylan Poirier, Senior Class President, reported on the idea of a combined Berlin and Gorham Prom
- Holiday Events and Concerts
- NH Department of Education School Approvals
COMMENTS Sara Peters spoke with three other parents that reported their children had lice from a certain class. She feels that a letter sent home to the parents would have been helpful.
Denise Valerino informed the Board that she did not speak with the school nurse, but did feel like she was being dismissed. She just wants to know when to look out for lice.
The school principals and the school board all agreed that the notice letter should direct parents to call the school nurse.
NEW BUSINESS The Board consensus was to go into non-public session in lieu of it being on the agenda. They would like the nonpublic session to be added on the agenda as an “if needed” item. The Superintendent will look into this option.
NON PUBLIC On a motion by Kenneth Proulx, seconded by Donald Labrecque, the Board voted to go into nonpublic session at 7:58 p.m. in accordance with RSA 91-A3II, (a), (b) & (c). On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.
On a motion by Kenneth Proulx, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to come out of nonpublic session at 9:33 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. No additional votes were taken in nonpublic session
STAFFING The Board was informed of Peter Rogers’, School Psychologist, retirement at the end of this school year.
ADJOURN On a motion by Kenneth Proulx, seconded by Lynn Moore, the Board voted to adjourn it’s meeting at 9:34 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary, Berlin Board of Education
