WORK SESSION
JANUARY 15, 2007
Mayor Danderson opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Executive Chambers of City Hall. Present: Mayor Danderson, Councilors Nelson, Grenier, Lafleur and Danderson. Councilors Donovan and Roy were absent. Also present were Acting City Manager Laura Viger, Deputy Police Chief Brian Valerino and the press.
Resolution: Underage Drinking Police Department Grant.
Deputy Police Chief Brian Valerino explained that this grant is available grant money left over that was not spent by other departments. There was over two thousand dollars available which has a zero cost to the taxpayers but is a time sensitive grant.
Councilor Danderson asked the Deputy Chief to provide Council with data regarding the success and outcome of the program.
Mr. Valerino reported that it is a very successful program which resulted in 18 arrests for underage drinking, 3 transportation of alcohol arrests and several warrants for arrest. Each person is treated the same and the mandatory minimum fine is $300 for the first offense. The high fines account for few multiple offenders. The patrols usually run from 6:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. which are peak times for partying youth. Unmarked vehicles make it possible to break up parties with as many as 20 - 35 kids at a time. Parents are called to pick up their kids and 9 out of 10 parents are thankful for the efforts of the patrolling officers.
Mayor Danderson has only heard of one person who was critical about the program. Some parents are not aware their kids are out drinking which could lead to other negative things. It is a worthwhile program that benefits our community.
Other: Nothing in other.
There being no further business under Work Session, Mayor Danderson declared the Work Session now ended at approximately 6:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Debra A. Patrick, CMC
City Clerk
