Selectmen Minutes 06/29/2015

                                                June 29, 2015

The June 29 meeting of the Board of Selectmen was called to order by Chairman Soter at 7 p.m. with all members in attendance.

Mr. Soter explained the meeting was scheduled to solicit input from residents in the Macy School neighborhood to discuss the disposition of the building now that is it closed.

Mr. Denis Sherlock of 336 Theresa Road asked the Board to keep the Macy neighborhood in mind when making decisions that could impact quality of life.  Mr. Soter stated his preference would be to consider housing given the school is in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Ms. Kala Smith expressed concern over cut-through traffic if the roadway to the south and the north are connected.

Mr. Martinis agreed some type of residential use should be pursued in light of the current zoning.

Mr. Sueltenfuss of Theresa Road also expressed his desire to see Theresa Road remain a dead end and not connected with Monique Drive.

Mr. Spencer expressed his belief that some open space should remain; however, some of the playing field may be needed for any residential development.

Mr. Mayhew agreed with the idea of keeping the property residential.  He stated his children went to school at Macy and it should remain a residential setting.

Edith Naylor expressed concern over the impact additional housing might have on school capacity.  Mr. Connor answered stating the MAPC had recently updated the Town’s Housing Production Plan and the community’s growth is not expected to increase and the school population is expected to continue to decline.

Mr. Martinis expressed his interest in seeing senior housing such as the 55 and older communities built in Town.  Mr. Martinis referred to the MAPC Housing

Plan which suggested the senior population in Town will continue to climb in the next few years resulting in a need for accessible housing.

Ms. Marcia Mendell of Bruce Road supported the idea of increased senior housing.

Mr. Spencer reminded residents that the Planning Board will be hosting Public Hearings if a decision is made to sub-divide the property for residential use.

Nicole Day expressed her desire to see the playground and ball field preserved.  She also expressed concern with vandalism at the school stating it is not unusual for children to climb up on the roof.

Mr. Trudeau of Monique Drive stated his belief the building should be demolished as quickly as possible to avoid vandalism issues.

Mr. Soter agreed and asked the audience to raise their hand if they would support the demolition of the property.  The majority of residents in attendance raised their hands with no resident speaking in opposition.

On a Mayhew/Spencer motion, the Board unanimously voted to place an Article on the warrant for the Fall Town Meeting requesting funds for the demolition of Macy school.

Mr. Soter stated there will be future meetings to discuss the disposition of the property, assuming Town Meeting supports the demolition.

On a Mayhew/Spencer motion, the Board unanimously voted to adjourn at 8:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Denis C. Fraine
