Becket Historical Commission Meeting Minutes  - 8/22/12
In attendance: Rob, Rita, Harry, Aaron          Meeting called to order at 7:00pm.
The minutes from the July 25, 2012 meeting were read. Rita moved to accept the minutes as read, Rob seconded and the minutes passed unanimously.
COMMUNICATIONS
  • No written communications. However, there was a phone call from a resident who was concerned about the Athenaeum auctioning off some of its historical items (spinning wheel) at its recent auction. Aaron offered to bring this concern to the Athenaeum board. The hope is to have some open communication with the Athenaeum prior to it parting with any historic items that are of Becket origin.
TREASURER’S REPORT
  • No activity since last meeting, balance remains at $800.
NORTH BECKET BLOCK GRANT REPORT
  • Rob reported on the status of the kiosk sign for Bidwell park. This project is currently on hold until all the involved parties can come to an agreement about the size, location and content of the sign.
FUTURE LOCATION OF HISTORICAL COMMISSION OFFICE
  • Rob attended a recent Select Board meeting at which the location of the Historical Commission office was discussed.  It was suggested that our office be moved the current Council on Aging office in the basement of Town Hall. Rita made a motion that we communicate to the Selectmen that they may move us to the COA office with the appropriate safety and climate controls in place. Harry seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS
  • Aaron ordered and received the Life with the Forty-ninth Massachusetts volunteers  by Henry T. Johns and brought it to the Historical Commission.
Rita continues to be in touch with Izzy about having him come in and look at some old postcards
There are a few Annual Town Reports missing from our collection in the Becket Room (’93, ’04, ’10). Rita will replenish with the stock in our office.
There was a discussion about how to deal with time-sensitive materials, if the Commission’s input is required prior to one of our scheduled meetings. We are not allowed to vote or confer over the phone. We will all think about how best to deal with this. Rob may attend an upcoming meeting about Open Meeting laws in Lenox.
NEW BUSINESS
  • Paul Campbell from the Becket Arts Center met with Rob about the Arts Center borrowing, under our supervision, several items from our collection to display during an Arts Center program this fall. Specifically, they are interested in borrowing:
Ballou Baskets, Child’s silk dress, Posters, Steel sign of High Street, Ballou Dam core sample, Dewey Tavern sign, Captain Whitney items (spy glass, license plate, etc.)
Rita moved to adjourn. Harry seconded and motion passed unanimously.  Meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm
