Becket Historical Commission Meeting Minutes                    March 28, 2012
Present: Rob, Rita & Aaron (with Nathaniel)     The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am
Minutes from the January meeting (the last meeting we held) were read and approved unanimously.
TREASURER’S REPORT      No activity since last report
COMMUNICATIONS
  • Rob received a request to serve on the design review committee for North Becket – he will join the committee
  • Received an email from a woman looking for information on Becket’s demolition by-law. Rob sent her a letter with the requested information
  • Received a variance request from the ZBA for property on Osceloa Dr. – no historical concerns
  • Received a letter from Ms. Simon about a balloon test for wind turbines to be located in Peru
  • Received notice of MA Civil War Sesquicentennial activity. Rob will try to attend the “kick-off” ceremony on April 9. Discussion ensued about creating a monument in park across from the Athenaeum honoring those who served in the Civil War from Becket. (more info in new business)
  • Received the 2012 State Register of Historic Places
  • Received request for info on Ballou Basket from Michele Sitterding of Batesville, Indiana. Aaron sent her the requested information and she sent us photos of the baskets she had recently purchased that bear the Ballou Basket, Becket, Massachusetts emblem
PROJECTS FOR 2012
We discussed projects that the Historical Commission will be engaged in during 2012:
  • Finishing the informational map project (placement of plexi, repair of frames)
  • Taking a look at the directional sign on Washington Mountain Road that directs people to North Becket and perhaps modernizing the sign
  • Creating a monument to honor Civil War veterans from Becket
  • Dissolving our existing Gift Account. Rob suggested that the Gift Account be dissolved after the Civil War monument is created, as we, technically, should not have a gift account
NEW BUSINESS
  • Discussion about creating a monument to honor Becket Civil War veterans – Rob suggested that the monument should have a “Civil War” look and feel to it unless it is cost-prohibitive to do so. Something stone (granite) and pyramid-like was suggested with a separate list of names affixed to the monument (because the list of names is extensive and we could not likely afford to have them etched on the stone) – maybe something like the sign affixed to the rail road sign (laminated paper or card stock)
  • Rita had numerous clippings/photos/documents to be filed with our collection of items that she shared
OLD BUSINESS
  • Rob is continuing to follow up on the Shaw Pond information request
  • Rob has not been able to find any additional information on the Alice House information request
  • Aaron & Rob will get to work on installing the plexi on the informational maps this Spring
Meeting adjourned at 10:00 am
