Historical Commission Minutes 1/5/11
Historical Commission Meeting Minutes
January 5, 2011
Commission members in attendance: Rob, Barb, Rita, Harry, Aaron & Jennifer
Meeting called to order at 7:04pm
  • Minutes read from November 2010 meeting (there was no meeting in December due to weather). Minutes accepted as read.
  • Discussion about plaque for Railroad monument in Ballou Park: Rob wrote a draft of what the plaque could say and a discussion ensued about whether or not the sign was flood debris or taken down when the station closed. Research will be done to find the correct answer. We will all think about the size/material/content for the plaque and discuss at the Feb. meeting.
  • Discussion about billboard maps of Becket: Selectmen gave their okay, so Aaron will get revised quotes for the signs (3 copies) on off-white and white background.
  • Discussion about formation of Historical Society: there is currently an ad on the Becket Town website asking for interest in Becket 250-year anniversary committee. The thought is that any interest in this committee could possibly lead to a Historical Society.
  • Discussion about Dornbush application for a historical plaque: deed for this property has not been researched as far back as possible, but there is some documentation to support a date of circa 1835. Commission decided that the issuance of plaques will be at the discretion of the Historical Commission. All agreed to issue a plaque for Mrs. Dornbush if she wants it – the plaque would say “Chaffee House circa 1835”. Aaron agreed to look into other sourcing options for plaques.
  • Old Business: no old business to address
  • Historical Commission to send thank you to Mullen House for the extensive work they have done on the Mullen House so far. Rob moved that he write a thank you letter, Barb seconded and all agreed.
  • Other new business: Barb informed the Commission that the Becket Arts Center needs part of its chimney rebuilt and is currently getting quotes for the repair. They will try to secure CPA or grant funds to pay for the repair. There are currently no historical concerns, but the Commission would like to see any plans for the repair before they commence.
Meeting adjourned at 7:50pm
