Historical Commission Minutes 11/3/10
Becket Historical Commission
Nov. 3, 2010
Town Hall
Present: Rob Gordon, Harry Roff, Rita Furlong, Barbara Stulhman
At 7:00 we went to the selectmen’s meeting to get their approval on the mock –up of the town sign that will be installed to replace the 4 x 6 washed out signs at the athenaeum lawn, YMCA Road intersection, and West Becket Cemetery. They approved and so we will have them printed using Community Preservation monies (voted on previously at the 2009 town meeting).
We also reminded the board that in 2015 Becket will celebrate its 250th birthday (ducentquinquagentennial). A committee should be formed to begin planning for that momentous occasion. They agreed to advertise the need for such a committee.
We resumed the meeting in our office.
Secretary’s Report read and accepted.
Barbara reported that the Art’s Center would like someone from this group to attend a meeting with Officer Mark Portiere at the town hall on Nov. 9th to participate in a discussion about missing art work .
Business:
  • Railroad sign: Dave Bacon, local landscaper and designer, designed a possible plan for the building of a stand for the sign. It has been approved by the building inspector.  A consensus to use this design by Mr. Bacon, whose  work  we are familiar with (Chester State Park, Mt. Greylock, ) was agreed upon. Rita will notify him to begin work. Cost of $500.00 will come from our gift account as previously discussed and voted on.
  • Town Pound replacement sign: A design was discussed, one sided or two sided will be decided after cost is determined. Size: 12” x 24” with letters at least 2 ¼” on a white background with black lettering on wood.   BECKET TOWN POUND and the date 1767 will be printed.  Rita will get a price from SIGNSMITH in Chester. Later on we may create and add an informational sign to tell the purpose of the pound in colonial days.
  • We need to replace the Historic District marker at the Parade Ground. We have an original. Perhaps Aaron can get a new more durable copy to place there. A new backboard will be needed.
  • Rob has a call in to Tom Paske, of BCHC regarding the age of Mrs. Dornbush’s home (County Road). His e-mail is tpaske@gmail.com or  413-568-1336. Rob has not heard back from him.
  • Duplication of records both here and the athenaeum: Rob met with former library director Peg Goss and present director Zina Jayne last Thursday. The athenaeum has a good quality scanner. Perhaps there is grant money to hire someone to duplicate records. It was agreed that we should work together to accomplish this deed which the state has been encouraging us to do for years now. Once copied, these documents need to be catalogued for easier referencing.
Meeting adjourned at 8:14
Respectfully submitted,

Rita Furlong, Sec. Pro-tem
