NOVEMBER 2001 HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETING DIRECTOR
*Monthly Intakes (76 total) on various issues including: evictions, employment/termination, renting, discrimination, etc…from individuals contacting the office in-person or via the telephone..
Discussion ensued over monthly intakes, Commission member Brandstetter raised the question of how a complaint may be handled at a school…what is the protocol from preliminary investigation to a complete complaint in advanced stages.

*Human Rights Recognition Awards program at the Schweinfurth: The catered fellowship reception/program attracted nearly 100 guests. Keynote Speaker, Rick Emanuel, donated a $500 check towards the Auburn Human Rights Commission Scholarship Fund from The Citizen newspaper. This was a needed and welcome surprise, offsetting the Commissionread on his behalf. The Commission was fortunate (for the third year in a row) to have a student volunteer from Auburn High School perform classical music on the piano. John Liberatore is a talented Junior at Auburn High School.  Commission members agree to the success of the program and how well it was received. HR members were especially pleased with the Governor Pataki
*Education Advertising campaign: The schedule is as follows-Thursday run dates of Oct. 25, Nov. 15, Dec. 13, Feb.7, March 7, April 4. The ads are 2 columns by 4 inches at the non-profit rate of $10.09 per column inch. Ads published in the paper before January 2002 are $80.72. The rate will rise after the new year and be adjusted accordingly. Discussion…members agree if budgetary funds could be stretched - there
*Steve Gage Productions has been contacted for assistance in producing human rights information for public broadcast. He suggested contacting his studio in October when scheduling is lighter. The HR office has slide presentations completed on Powerpoint and are ready for conversion to VHS.  Commission awaits Steve
Attended the monthly Homsite Board Meeting. Discussed various issues on housing, budgets, etc.

*Multicultural stories to area school students are being explored through a variety of informational sources. HR has contacted “Aunt Helenrequests a memo be sent to City Manager John Salomone for the reinstatement of $1000 to our current budget. Without the reinstatement will cause the Commission to cut the multicultural program from it yearly schedule. HR Director will forward the memo. Commissioner discussed this matter with the Manager in August 2001.

*”Storycrafters” are contacted for more information on fees and scheduling times. The duo performs and teaches all over the Northeast and the British Isles. They are “known for their creative integration of ethnic instrumentation into their stories and for their unique retellings of folklore.” Fee information forthcoming. This group was contacted to compare programs and fees. They may be used or as an alternative to Aunt Helen
*New/Old business: Commission members discuss the reinstatement of funds for programs.
