HISTORIC SITES COMMISSION
Meeting minutes from February 26, 2002

I. Approval of the Minutes
D. Lamb made a motion to approve the January minutes, seconded by E. McHugh. All were in favor, and the motion carried.

Committee Reports
II. Planning & Development Committee
J. Kline reminded the group of the upcoming Strategic Planning Session, Mon. March 11th from 10AM
J. Kline said Commission members need to choose a Chair. After a brief discussion, S. Craner made a motion that M. Alberici serves as Chair, with Vice-Chair David Dempsey, seconded by P. Anderegg. All were in favor and the motion carried.

III. Marketing Committee
J. Kline passed out copies of the reprinted Historic Sites brochure. She encouraged attractions to stock up on this new one, and throw out the old since the Schweinfurth was not included in the last version. Copies of the brochure are available at the Tourism Office and the Schweinfurth.

J. Kline said they answered 14 phone inquiries this month, and the website had 836 hits since the last meeting. Total web hits are 14,633. J. Kline passed out forms to participate in Wayne Co. Showcase 2002, targeted to group leaders and tour operators. J. Kline circulated copies of the thank you letter, and a photo, from Cayuga Co. Parks & Trails for the light display sponsorship.
J. Kline circulated copies of the 2001-2002 Commission Program Summary, highlighting ads placed, grants awarded, travel shows, etc. This will be a good tool for the retreat. J. Kline passed out copies of a press clip about the Seward House and the Tubman Home from travel writer Ralph Collier. She also supplied copies of the press release about the Underground Railroad, done by Central Finger Lakes partners, for travel writers.

V. Other Business
E. McHugh passed around a draft of the passport, for “Passport to History.” It resembles a real passport, navy with a gold seal. The last page pulls out to be turned in to the teacher at the end of the program. E. McHugh passed around copies of each site
M. Alberici passed around copies of the “Best of NY,” a high-end publication, whose writers are in Auburn doing research to feature the Finger Lakes in their next edition. J. Kline said she gave them information when they stopped the Tourism Office, and they had been in touch with Mike Long, from City Planning.

W. Dewitt said due to the negative newspaper coverage, the Tubman Home is reviewing their operations, to make sure the Randall experience isn
S. Craner of ADP said they are working on a new all-inclusive downtown brochure. Tom Hussey painted a colorful downtown scene for the cover. It should be done at the end of March. P. Wisbey said there was a “Common Thread” meeting on Feb. 14th, and they have a draft of the brochure. The group will meet again in April. T. Hussey said the Ruth Laredo concert, offered in coordination with the Schweinfurth is being rescheduled. M. Alberici said they nearly sold out of tickets for Chef
W. Dewitt said the Tubman Pilgrimage would happen May 24 & 25. Friday night, Opera Ebony will perform at East Middle School, followed by a reception (no dinner) at the Holiday Inn. Saturday morning there will be a gravesite ceremony at 10AM, followed by activities at the Tubman Home. P. Wisbey said Doris K. Goodwin would give a lecture June 8th at 7PM. They are changing the venue from East Middle to Willard Chapel due to her recent controversy.
The Commission adjourned at 5:05PM.

The next Commission meeting is Tuesday, April 23rd at 3:30PM,
third floor meeting room at City Hall.
