Meeting Minutes
August 10, 2004

1. Meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m. in the 1st floor caucus room of Memorial City Hall
In attendance were members: Betty Lewis, Mike Deming, Peter Gabak, Jim Hutchinson. Staff members Mike Long and Alicia McKeen.
2. Approval of Minutes: Peter Gabak made a motion to accept the minutes of June 29, 2004, seconded by Betty Lewis. All members vote approval. Motion carried.
3. Certificate of Appropriateness:
1. 25 Grover St. – Barbara Bowen - fence.
Mike Long explains the location of the fence, 6’ privacy fence surrounding an existing patio. Motion by Jim Hutchinson to approve the plan as presented, seconded by Peter Gabak. All members vote approval. Motion carried
2. CA’s issued by staff:
a) 54 South St. – DePalma Masonry– Mike Long met with Steve DePalma to go over what was being done. They removed the front brick and replaced it as was. Repair of sidewalks, walls and porches in kind.
b) 6 Hamilton Ave – James Lindsay– Mike Long consulted with Mike Deming concerning a year yard fence.
c) 133 South St. – Mike Chamberlain – extension of previous CA to continue work.
d) 149 North St.- Mike and Diane Long – consulted with Mike Deming for in kind repair to greenhouse.
e) 31 Grover St. - Gearhardt– re-roof architectural asphalt shingles
f) 107 South St. – Jos. Solon – in kind porch repairs. Met with contractor and told him the picket fence must be removed and porch repaired.
Motion to accept CA’s issued made by Jim Hutchinson, seconded by Peter Gabak. All members vote approval. Motion carried.
4. Other matters.
A. Mike Long talks about the Preserve America Program. State Historic office involved. Similar to Save America’s Treasures but different program. Grants are available. Bernadette Castro is the Chair. Auburn asked to become involved. Need a recommendation by the Board to apply for status. Will get more info and do background memo for Council. Motion to apply for status made by Betty Lewis, seconded by Jim Hutchinson. All members vote approval. Motion carried.
B. Jim Hutchinson asks for the motivation behind the crushed limestone at Freedom Park on North St. – looks terrible. Mike Long states that Gerry DelFavero thought it would be easier to maintain. Christine Carter has complained to the Manager and he has agreed that it was inappropriate. Jim suggests a memo be sent reiterating how bad it looks. Mike Deming will sign.
C. Mike Long – 62 South St. was given permission to install an elevator and to install an extension under the porch to do so. Jim Hutchinson suggests landscaping around this area.
D. Gail (Cornell intern) has been checking in. She has been taking pictures. Would like her and Dave to come in again for an update.
E. Steve Gage – project needs to be finished – Mike Deming will call him.
F. Mike Long stated the assessor is trying to get a grant for a database to archive old maps. Focus will be on South St. but maybe extend to other areas. They would like a letter of support.
5. Adjournment: Next meeting is scheduled for September 14, 2004 at Memorial City Hall at 7:00 p.m. – 1st floor caucus room. Motion to adjourn made by Jim Hutchinson, seconded by Peter Gabak. All members vote approval. Meeting adjourned.
