CITY COUNCIL MEETING #17
April 18, 2002

Acting Mayor Tom McNabb called the meeting to order. Roll Call:

Acting Mayor Tom McNabb read a Proclamation in support of SAVAR and the Take Back The Night Rally. He then introduced Anita Stroud from SAVAR who thanked Council and invited everyone to attend. Councilor Hunter asked her about the funding for SAVAR and about their participation in Cayuga County Counseling. She explained about fund raising and grants. She also invited everyone to attend “Java with the Gents”
at Springside on May 22nd. Acting Mayor McNabb thanked her for coming.
Acting Mayor McNabb then read a Proclamation announcing the week of April 22-28, 2002 as Federation of New York Insurance Professionals Week. He introduced Carol Wallace who accepted the Proclamation and thanked Council.

Acting City Manager Tom Leone introduced Fire Chief Michael Quill who spoke on the Firefighter Survival; Fast Team Training the City would be hold for AFD and Fire Departments from the county. Chief Quill described what the course covered, and why these training tactics are important. Councilor Jacobs said he firmly believes in courses such as this one, and because of the recent severe fires in surrounding cities, and the death of two firefights, it only underscores the importance of this fire training. He also questioned if the fires would be live or canned smoke. Chief Quill wished to express how important he felt this course was towards helping make firefights from the surrounding towns feel comfortable with the Auburn firefighters, and vice versa.
In case of a bad fire, the City relied on the surrounding towns for reinforcements, and firefights had to be comfortable working with each other. Chief Quill said there would be a cost of $125 to help off set the cost of the training. Councilor Hunter asked if this was a part of the fire training facility. The Chief said yes, this was working towards helping fire companies learn to work with each other. Councilor Jacobs said he felt this training was important, and urged safety precautions based on the training drill recently held in another city when the Assistant Fire Chief is now facing indictment for the death of a firefighter.
Councilor Dempsey asked that the City Manager and/or Planning Department schedule an update on Lattimore Hall with Council. Councilor Dempsey said there were a lot of rumors floating around town, and he felt they should be addressed. He would like to know the financial status of the building, and what firm plans there are for the building.
Councilor Jacobs wanted to inform Council, that in accordance with the parking ticket amnesty program, they were able to trace his daughter and send her a letter. She is now married, has a new name, and is living in Syracuse, and the letter was to inform her of a ten-year-old ticket. When she sent a check to the Treasurer

There being no further business, Acting City Manager Tom Leone asked that Council recess and reassemble at the Upper Pump House. Council recessed from City Hall at 6:25 PM
Council was taken on a tour of the upper pump house on Owasco Lake, by Frank DeOrio, Director of Municipal Utilities. Mr. DeOrio, Director of Public Utilities described the improvement made and the function of the pump house.
Councilor Dempsey motioned for adjournment; seconded by Councilor Hunter. City Council adjourned at 7:20 PM.
