Antrim Parks & Recreation Commission
Minutes
May 11, 2017
The meeting was called to order at 7:17 pm.
Attendance
Parks & Rec Commissioners:  Joan Gorga, Isaac Lombard and Chris Morris
Recreation Director: Celeste Lunetta
Minutes
The minutes from the March 9, 2017 meeting were approved as written.
Memorial Park
Tennis Court Repairs. Celeste got positive references for Lineberry Tennis. They will pressure wash the court as soon as possible, and crack repairs, asphalt coating and line painting should be completed before July 4.
Skatepark. Repairs have been completed. We’re looking for a group to step up to paint the exposed wood. The park has been well used and there has been some trash left.
Bandstand. The vandalized bandstand board has been repaired. Joan will borrow the primer and paint from Chris to hide the damage. The spire is still being remade in the ConVal woodshop. At least one Antrim student is working on it.
Antrim In The Evening. The schedule is almost complete. Acts will include several local bands, wildlife, dance instruction and a magic show. Major sponsors are again Bank of New Hampshire and Dr. Perry’s office. We may want to send out a letter to Antrim residents to try to bring more people to the events.
Maintenance/Other. Carl and Bob Bethel removed the shrubby growth from around the Mill Pond before the fishing derby. There was a good turnout, with 50-70 kids, but because of the rain, the grill was not set up to cook the fish. The water was fast and high, but fish were caught. We might want to get more fish in the future, and should work on getting more sponsors and prize donors. We should also set up a small temporary fence to protect the garden beds around the bandstand from being trampled during the fishing derby.
The picnic table could use a new coat of stain.
Shea Field
ConVal agreement. The Selectboard addressed the Antrim-ConVal Shea Field agreement and suggested only grammatical changes.
Maintenance. The laser-guided infield grading was completed in spite of all the rain. JCL Septic delivered the infield mix and protected the turf with plywood sheets. It took more material than expected, but the labor costs were less, so the project still ended up costing ~$3700, and it should last 5-7 years. There was one minor incident with the GBS softball team moving onto the field in the middle of the project. ConVal will share the cost of portable toilets at the field.
Gregg Lake
Update. The portable toilet has been brought in. We received a Lake Host grant of $1450, based on the match from last year. Celeste went to the Point Person training. The big change is that “Clean & Drain” is now the law, and the state has increased enforcement of transfers of invasives.
One barrier in the parking lot has been broken. We will use large boulders rather than benches to delineate the dog swim area. Celeste will also float single buoys in the water to mark the area. We need to re-sign the beach to make areas and regulations clear. Carl will fix the bathhouse storeroom door. Beach E coli testing and VLAP testing dates have been scheduled.
The stargazing program was successful and will continue. The beach will open with a party on June 24. Swim lessons will be held for older children and adults in July and younger children in August.
Town Gym
Floor. Information found at Town Hall regarding the gm construction was not informative. No further decisions have been made regarding the gym floor repair.
ConVal agreement. Celeste will make a few final changes to the ConVal agreement, distribute it and send it to the Selectboard for the June 5 meeting.
Recreation Department
Before and After School Club. Grapevine staff met again with Celeste to consider options for the BASC, which will be discussed before the Selectboard at the June 5 meeting. Administration of BASC can either be kept the way it is now, or it could be moved entirely to the Rec Dept or entirely to the Grapevine. The Commission recommends that a decision be made to either administer the program entirely through the Grapevine or through the Rec Dept. The Rec Dept will continue to offer space in the Rec Office and use of the Town Gym regardless of who administers the program. We recognize the value of the program to the town.
Scotty Dunlap memorial skate event. The Commission supports the organization of an event at the skatepark as a memorial to Scotty Dunlap.
Update. Spring programs are ongoing. Summer camp flyers are ready, and Zoe Page has been hired to run the summer camp programs.
The next regularly scheduled Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting will be Thursday, June 8th at 7:00 pm at the Rec Office.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:13 pm.
